CLAIR
Overview
Team · University Project · Masters
CLAIR is an artistic first-person psychological horror experience that delves into the human psyche in a retro-futuristic setting.
The player assumes the role of an assistant — later revealed to be the AI itself — using advanced experimental technology to enter the mind of a patient struggling with mental distress.
The objective is to 'cure' the patient by identifying and neutralizing the trauma anchor, thereby enabling the patient to swiftly resume normal activities.
The primary aim of this game is to provide players with an abstract and immersive experience, one that can be interpreted in varied ways depending on individual perspectives.
My Roles in the Team
-
I conceptualized and implemented all systems and gameplay elements of the game, including an unique level streaming system that allows for efficient shifts in the fundamental layout and look of a given space - a core mechanic in CLAIR.
-
I planned the overall themes and gameplay aspects of every level. Taking into consideration the suggestions of the team, I made sure to build interesting levels with a clear theme.
-
I created the unique retro-futuristic look of CLAIR using various techniques to simulate pixelation and color decimation or create interesting visuals that fit the technical aspects of the game’s protagonist.
As the player will see the world through the eyes of an AI, I had to solve the unique challenge on how to communicate this to the player.
-
I also created some 3D Objects players will see during the game, mainly in the first room.
I focused on the key objects that are relevant to the gameplay, but also created some of the objects that fill the world specifically.
-
I created, mixed and implemented the audio in the game.
Here I also leveraged some unique capabilities of the Unreal Engine, especially the Audio Volumes with blending between different rooms and their soundscapes.
-
Alongside my teammates, I conceptualized the story behind the game and wrote the dialogue and texts the player will see.
